FIERY FEELS

WHERE DO STRONG EMOTIONS SHOW UP IN YOUR BODY?

The Science

Recognize your warning signs. Notice where in the body fiery emotions show up: tense shoulders, shaky hands, or urge to scream.

When you feel angry, your body undergoes physiological changes such as increased heart rate, blood pressure, and muscle tension. You can not eliminate powerful emotions, but you can be proactive on how to reduce the intensity of the feeling by simply being aware of physical clues.

Learning how to manage and express our emotions in a more constructive way can help us avoid the negative consequences of anger.

The Calming Technique:
Elephant Stomp

Engaging in physical activity can help release pent-up energy and reduce feelings of anger. Even better, make the action silly! For example, move like an elephant:

  1. Imagine your body is a big, heavy elephant.

  2. How would it move? How would it turn around?

  3. How does it get down onto the ground and roll over?

  4. Stomp your feet like an elephant.

  5. Move the trunk, does it make a sound?

Elephants, not your animal?
Pick your favorite creature and act out its movement instead.
